Social Trail Run - Jonkershoek

The route for all groups start at the Jonkershoek main gate. We will follow the jeep track for 600m before veering of on a single track up the mountain. The next section of the route stays on a single track for 3km, gaining only about 330m in elevation. The route flattens out onto the start of the long traverse that takes you all the way to the start of Swartboskloof at 8.7 km. Along the way you will pass the fire hut lookout point, a few mountain streams and a beautiful little forested waterfall of Sosyskloof.

The hikers and the trail runners split at the start of the Swartboskloof climb; hikers head back towards the jeep track to the main gate (along the way they can cool of in the river) and the runners carry on up towards spectacular views at the top of Swartboskloof. This climb is roughly 3km long with more or less 600m of elevation gain. Halfway to the top, there is a fairly reliable mountain spring at +-9.6km. Before you expect it, the relentless Swartboskloof climb suddenly gives way and you find the trail flattening out at 11.7km (1125m). The view point is brilliant and well worth the climb!

This is a fairly easy route up until the turn off towards Swartboskloof. The climb up the kloof is more advanced and a fair amount of fitness and skill is recommended. Although there are a few natural water streams along the way, fresh water or water purification tablets are recommended. The last 4km of the route is a flat jeep track for those runner wanting to finish strong and to loosen the joints after the steep downhill of Swartboskloof. Afterwards, everyone is welcome to join us for mid-morning cuppa or lunch at Ride In.
