SOCIAL TRAIL RUNS

COUNTDOWN TO OUR NEXT EVENT:

ABOUT

Social Trail Run - Bainskloof

Initially the heart behind organizing this event series was to create a platform on which to raise money to fund an expedition to a Kenyan Orphanage, Heroes of the Nation.  We visited the school and orphanage during March 2018, and envision our next project as a training camp. We would like to offer the children and staff access to training programs, proper running and training gear as well as information about the sport and a healthy lifestyle. The proceeds will go into making this a reality. For more information follow the link at the bottom of the page.

Route description:

Park and meet at the 1st Toll, Bainskloof, R301. https://goo.gl/maps/tcyej2d8VXH2

Cost: R110

Total distance from the route: - + 19km

(1st Toll to the waterfall and back - hikers / runners can easily turn back at any stage)

Difficulty of the route: Easy / Average

The route starts at the 1st toll, we will follow an easy two-track trail heading up into the Bainskloof valley for about 3km. On a beautiful, clear day, the view is such that Table Mountain is visible in the distance. During this first 3km of the route one has a unique view of the Wellington valley, Paarlberg and Paardeberg and the opportunity to walk to the ruins of Hugo's house and later a memorial in remembrance of young people who drowned in the river years ago. The channel that leads to Gawie's water is itself a memorial with an interesting origin story.

If the rain continues to fall as it has in the last few days, the flow of the river promises to be a spectacular image. The Jeep track road melts together after 3km and we continue on a footpath leading to the waterfall, hidden further up in the valley. The next +6km of the route becomes more technical, but will not be a challenge for hikers or runners. Just be ready for a pair of wet shoes and a few river crossings (the river is no wider than + -1m and can easily be crossed). The winding footpath leads to a stretch of grassy fields, from where we will bundu bash to two magnificent waterfalls and a rock pool. The waterfalls serves as the official turning point of the route. The total elevation gain over the entire route is + -200m and is therefore quite flat
